PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Physics

The PhD student will work in the Division of Material Physics and be part of a project conducted in collaboration with Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble (France) and the NIST Centre for Neutron Research in Gaithersburg (MD, USA). One peculiarity of polymers is the pronounced non Newtonian behavior or in other words the change in viscosity for different shear rates. The distinctive changes in the shear and loss moduli can be explained by microscopic properties like the structure or internal relaxation of the molecules. However, experimental data on the changes in the local dynamics of polymers under shear load are scarce or even missing our days. Still such information is essential to draw a complete picture of flow in polymers. In this PhD, we will apply high resolution neutron spectroscopy to polymers under flow. The experiments will be complemented by small angle scattering experiments probing the microscopic structure and rheology. We will reveal phase transitions under shear and trace possible changes in the topological interactions of the polymer chains for higher shear rates and advance our understanding of viscoelasticity on a microscopic level.

 (04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Scientific Computing

As a PhD student in this project you will be able to focus on multiscale problems with applications in quantum physics. We are interested in simulating Bose-Einstein condensates which are formed when a gas of Bosons is cooled to ultralow temperatures. Bose-Einstein condensates are of great interest when studying quantum effects such as superfluidity and the closely related phenomena of superconductivity. Multiscale problems are encountered in many different applications. For instance, when physical behavior like heat diffusion is modeled in a composite material. Typical for these problems is the rapid variation in the material properties throughout the domain, which results in partial differential equations with rough and discontinuous coefficients. It is well known that classical finite element methods does not perform very well for these kind of problems. To overcome this issue there exist a range of different methods, one of them is Localized Orthogonal Decomposition. This method focuses on enhancing the classical finite elements by using data from the problem.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science on safe and efficient programming languages

Managed languages (such as Java, Erlang, Python, R and JavaScript) allow a high level of programming abstraction which allows rapid application development with fewer errors, in particular by presenting programmers with an abstract view of memory that can be managed automatically by the runtime system (aka execution environment). The efficiency of the algorithms at the core of runtime systems for managing memory, scheduling, etc. are imperative for the performance of managed languages. The strive for efficiency drives up complexity of the algorithms, stressing the need for a rigorous process for verifying their correctness. The goal of this research project is to improve safety and efficiency of programming. There are different possible projects under this broader aim, including improving type systems or other forms of static analysis to make it possible to reject erroneous programs at compile-time; efficiently manage resources in the style of Rust; developing efficient algorithms for execution environments for e.g. memory management or scheduling, or verification of algorithms and protocols for execution environments. We will work with the successful candidate on identifying the most suitable project based on the candidate’s background, interests and long-term goals.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Cancer Systems Biology

Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumour in adults despite available treatments an average survival rate is only 15 months. The contributing factors to this poor prognosis are the highly invasive nature of glioblastoma cells enabling the invasion of the healthy brain tissue and therapy resistance. To facilitate development of better therapeutic strategies mechanisms of glioblastoma invasion need to be understood. In this project, the PhD student will use zebrafish xenografts, the transplantation of human glioblastoma cells into zebrafish, to investigate the role of key factors regulating glioblastoma invasion. The zebrafish model has become increasingly popular for studying glioblastoma invasion as it provides a genetically tractable and transparent system for visualizing tumour growth and invasion in a live organism. By combining the high-resolution imaging of glioblastoma invasion in vivo with gene knock-out in the glioblastoma xenografts this project aims to determine the molecular mechanisms underlying glioblastoma invasion. To identify the inhibitors of glioblastoma this project will set up a drug testing screen. Thus, this project promising to contribute new knowledge to possible development of new therapeutic strategies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in grid connection of renewable energy systems, with a focus on power electronics

The division has a dedicated lab for power electronics research, as well as several experimental stations with in-house made power converters. This project aims to design, develop and test power converters for connecting several generators for marine current power to the grid. The project has access to simulation software, the experimental lab, and the experimental site with a marine current power turbine in Söderfors, Sweden.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website

Uppsala University  is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.

The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.

Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.

Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
